E-mail Makes You Lazy

by Bill Jones on December 4, 2010

Do you remember not having e-mail? Some of you perhaps but not the youngsters.

Me? Oh yes I do remember getting my first work e-mail. I thought it was a cool new tech way of communication.

But…it made me lazy.

Lazy?

Yes lazy.

You see the environment I was in was not huge nor global. You could get to anyone’s office in less than 5 minutes. (Heck in 5 minutes you’d could be out the door, in your car and at the first traffic light!)

But we had e-mail. Oh it was sooooo much “easier” to tap out a quick note and hit send than to walk a couple of minutes to another office. There was even talk that e-mail would save us time and we would be more “productive”.

Easier perhaps. But really all it did was put my butt in a chair for a longer period of time.

The time we “saved” actually equated to less.

Less movement equated to stiffer joints, less calories burned, less our muscles were used and less for our bodies to adapt to.

Less did not equal more…except more problems.

Fast-forward. In many situations people write e-mails just to have a trail of communication. So what should you do now?

Simple solution.

Write the e-mail…but do not send it…yet.

Make sure you personally visit the person you are emailing. Have your conversation. Go back to your desk and edit your e-mail to say: “per our conversation”.

Now you’ve networked. You’ve gotten out of your seat. You’ve moved your body, burned some calories and stimulated your muscles.

As with any change it may be difficult to do it at first. Keep it up. It will get easier. And you will get all the benefits!

How To Walk

by Bill Jones on November 23, 2010

Goggle “How to walk”.

You’ll get “About 289,000,000 results (0.10 seconds)”.

Oh you’ll get all kinds of advice from shoes and socks to posture to arm swing and a boatload of other “advice”. Ughhhhh…

Are you kidding me?

Put one foot in front of the other.

Repeat.

When In Doubt: Move

November 23, 2010

Your body is designed to move. Let’s think about your body a bit. Everything moves on a molecular level. Everything moves on a microscopic level. It just seems logical that everything should move on a macroscopic level. In general it is better to be moving rather than standing and better to be standing rather than [...]

The Best Exercise in 18 Seconds or Less

November 22, 2010

People always ask “What is the best exercise for someone that doesn’t have time to go to a gym?” I love this question because the answer is very simple…and effective. I tell them to stand up. They do. Then I tell them to sit down. They do. Then I tell them to do it 10 [...]

The Stairs

November 19, 2010

As a physical therapist (day job) I listen to people. Many of them complain of not being able to do things they used to do. The main reason isn’t an injury. The main reason is they simply stopped doing it. The body adapted. Then when they had to do it…well they couldn’t…or at least not [...]

The First Step Away From Home

November 18, 2010

Like I said with the first post: “The entire process is gradual. You didn’t get out of shape over night and you won’t get in shape overnight.” So what is the “First Step”? Simple. Walk. I think I hear the groans from the universe of office workers. “I already knew that!” You say. “I thought [...]

The Costs of Obesity

November 16, 2010

An interesting conversation to place one evening while at a hospital emergency room with my wife. We had to make the trip. Not because of an “obesity” related problem, far from it. The doctor did a fine job. He asked all the right questions. The fascinating part about the visit is one of the things [...]

Statistics and the Office Worker

November 14, 2010

PREDICTION: You work in an office. Why else would you be here? Perhaps you spend more time in your office than you would like. Time is something amazing. You never have enough of it. Sometimes you may think, “I have no time for me.” and of course you have no time to exercise. No time [...]

Change Your Words, Change Your World

November 12, 2010

The words you use will sometimes dictate your action or lack of action. Eliminate these words from your vocabulary: should, could, would, hope (wish), try (attempt). You may even think of other words to do away with. Should: Everyone feels they “should do” or “should have done” something. The truth is this…at the time you [...]

Your Life and Goals

November 11, 2010

Your Life Take an honest, a truly honest account of your life as is. Think about it. All aspects. Now get out a paper and pen. Time to write everything down. Some of you can write this off the top of your heads. Some of you will have to get out your daily calendars, phones [...]
